Miracles and Wonders is a captivating tale that encompasses the realms of sex, travel, drink, drugs, rock'n'roll, as well as the diverse realms of stegosauruses, elephants, and kittens. Over a remarkable 40-year career, the Jazz Butcher band traversed the globe, unafraid and undaunted, leaving an indelible mark by recording 15 studio albums. They masterfully repackaged true stories as miracles and wonders, selling them back to us as brilliantly astute, wry, wrought, and occasionally just plain silly pop songs. Enemies of indie, new wave, and hair metal, the band charted their own unique and rocky path, one replete with touring anarchy, escapades, and adventures. Along the way, they rubbed shoulders with both the great and good, as well as the apparently insignificant and the very, very bad.
When Pat Fish, the Butcher himself, passed away suddenly in October 2021, many feared that his classically trained brain, remarkable memory, and talent as a raconteur had been lost forever. However, this is not entirely the case. Pat and his long-suffering co-author have meticulously captured, catalogued, and described each recorded song, interspersed with the true stories that inspired them. The result is a meandering, cacophonous concordance of the Jazz Butcher songbook, a volume large enough to serve as a doorstop in a stampede. Accompanied by hundreds of illustrations, many of which have been uniquely sourced from the Fishy Mansions Archives, this work stands as a testament to the band's legacy.
Pat Fish (1957-2021) lived, and sometimes barely survived, the life of a professional musician from 1982 to 2021. He was the co-founder, primary songwriter, and driving force behind the renowned band, The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy. Their discography includes acclaimed albums such as 'A Scandal in Bohemia' with Glass Records, 'The Cult of the Basement' with Creation, 'The Last of the Gentleman Adventurers', and the posthumously released 'The Highest in the Land' with Tapete. Throughout his life, Pat was a champion of socialism and animal rights, and a staunch world citizen.
Philip Snow, Pat's long-suffering co-author, once apologized to Pat for working for the Government, guzzling gas, and eating meat. Although he still works in Government as a Knowledge and Information Management professional, Philip has since taken a step back from those practices, no longer consuming the flesh of other species. Beyond his current obsession with The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, Philip has also written a ghost story, 'The Dutch Doll' (2007), and a biography of Victorian writer Jessie Saxby in 'Tales from Wullver's Hool' (The Shetland Times, 2018). In the future, Philip plans to delve deeper into the subject of polar explorer Peter Freuchen, as he continues to ponder the mysteries of the world. He currently resides in Kettering, or as Pat would say, Ketamine, NN15.
